Hanohano 'O Kona/Honoring Kona, a free community lecture series starting in 2012, will spotlight local and state speakers on a wide variety of cultural and historical subjects. Presented by Kona Historical Society, in cooperation with the County of Hawai'i, this lecture series is a gift from the Society to the community that has supported it for so long. Free of charge, it is open to all, residents and visitors alike.

The talks will be held the last Wednesday of every month at the new West Hawai'i Civic Center on Kealakehe Parkway (going up to Kealakehe High School)

The 2012 Genealogy Classes, "Digging For Your Roots"
Genealogy Research Workshops

Begin this month (January) and run through October 2012.

The two-day course will be on Tuesday and Thursday of each week from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. HST (Hawai'i Standard Time).

Instructor Fran McFarland specializes in teaching genealogical research in Hawai'i, not just for Native Hawaiians, but for immigrant groups and foreigners who arrived here in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and made Hawai'i their home. She was born and raised in Honolulu. She has helped thousands of people research their roots to find missing branches of the family tree or establish blood quantum for Hawaiian entitlement programs. She is a member of the Utah Genealogical Association.

The first book of its kind to be published by a Native Hawaiian scholar about the Pele ohana. This book launch will feature readings by Dr. Kanahele, performances of mele from the book by Kumu Hula Leinaala Kalama Heine, Kumu Hula Sonny... Ching, Kumu Hula Snowbird Bento and their halau.
