NHGSoc Partners With Ka Lei Maile Ali'i HCC On Ku'e Petitions

posted Jan 16, 2012 1:17 AM by Native Hawaiian Genealogy Society   [ updated Jan 16, 2012 1:17 AM ]

A'ohe hana nui ka alu'ia.
No task is too big when done together.

The Native Hawaiian Genealogy Society (NHGSoc) is excited to announce that we are partnering with the Ka Lei Maile Ali'i Hawaiian Civic Club (HCC) in a shared effort to continue to transcribe/index the Ku'e Petitions; also known as the The Hui Aloha 'Āina Anti-Annexation Petitions of 1897-1898.

Through various conversations over several weeks, both organization's Pelekikena; Lynette Hi'ilani Cruz of the Ka Lei Maile Ali'i HCC and Kāwika Kolomona Kamake'e'āina of NHGSoc, worked together to find ways in which each organization could combine their individual projects and efforts.

The result is a partnership in which the information being transcribed/indexed from the Ku'e Petitions, will be combined into a single set of data that will eventually be utilized as the source for a searchable online database.

This joint effort will double the number of volunteers who have come forth to kokua (assist) each organization, with this important work and provide additional data from which the final searchable online database will pull from. This will provide an opportunity to have a larger percentage of the inoa (names) on the Ku'e Petitions, transcribed/indexed.

By sharing resources, each organization's individuals goals and purpose for their projects, can be realized together. While each organization will maintain their current process as it pertains to their own project, the information gathered will be mahele (shared) between the two, providing access to data at an earlier date, that would otherwise take much longer to obtain.

With more and more people joining the cause, our nā kūpuna (ancestors) will finally have their moment to be recognized and their voices to be heard.

If you would like to join the effort presented by NHGSoc as an individual; or represent an organization that would like to kokua (help) as a group, please visit www.nhgsoc.com/projects/H4AP. If you would like to join the effort presented by the Ka Lei Maile Ali'i HCC, please contact us and we will direct you appropriately.

NHGSoc Partners With The Midwest Genealogy Center

posted Nov 8, 2011 3:33 AM by Native Hawaiian Genealogy Society   [ updated Nov 8, 2011 3:39 AM ]

NHGSoc is partnering with the Midwest Genealogy Center (MGC); part of the Mid-Continent Public Library (MCPL) system, located in Independence, MO, to host a Native Hawaiian Genealogy Seminar in Fall 2012.

This partnership will allow for the first time in the Midwest, a robust discussion of the unique aspects of studying Native Hawaiian genealogy, to the general public, through a full-day event.

NHGSoc is excited for the opportunity to bring this event to the mainland and to share the important work we do within our community.

Through this partnership, MGC will also direct their members and patrons interested in studying Native Hawaiian genealogy, to NHGSoc.

More information will be put forth in the coming months regarding this event.

Social Media & Web Browsing Tools Added

posted Sep 3, 2011 2:06 PM by Native Hawaiian Genealogy Society   [ updated Sep 3, 2011 2:42 PM ]

We have added a multi-functional social media and web browsing tool to our website and are test driving it within the Online Resources section.

When you visit the aforementioned section, at the top of the page you will see buttons for Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Orkut, Google Buzz and Favorites (for Internet Explorer).

If the test drive works out for our members and visitors, we will start adding this feature to other sections of our website, including individual postings within our News and Articles section.

By providing these tools, we allow you to easily mahele (share) with your friends and 'ohana on various social media platforms, the resources you find on our website. Through the Favorites button for Internet Explorer, you can simply add a page on our website to your Favorites list with one click.

It is important to note that Google Buzz is in a limited testing phase with the public. Orkut is Google's current social media platform and may be phased out if Google Buzz passes the testing phase and rolls out to a wider audience. If this does take place, it will necessitate slight changes to the social media button features. We will inform you if and when this happens.

RSS Feeds Added

posted Sep 1, 2011 1:39 PM by Native Hawaiian Genealogy Society   [ updated Sep 1, 2011 1:48 PM ]

Busy? Can't get to the website you like through a work computer? Here's a solution for you that will keep you up to date on those things you may be missing out on.

To make it easier for you to keep up on what is new or has been changed/updated on our website, we have enabled RSS feeds for various sections.

First, we have added a Recent Updates section to our website, which will allow you to subscribe to posts via RSS feeds.

We have also updated our Articles section, which like the Recent Updates section, will allow you to subscribe to posts via RSS.

Our News section remains as it has always been and also allows for RSS subscription.

What is RSS you may be asking yourself and how does it benefit me? RSS or Rich Site Summary, is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news-related websites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS feed to whoever wants it.

RSS solves a problem for people who regularly use the web. It allows you to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in. You save time by not needing to visit each site individually. You ensure your privacy, by not needing to join each site's email newsletter. The number of sites offering RSS feeds is growing rapidly and includes big names like Yahoo News.

Feed Reader or News Aggregator software allow you to grab the RSS feeds from various sites and display them for you to read and use.

A variety of RSS Readers are available for different platforms. Some popular feed readers include Amphetadesk (Windows, Linux, Mac), FeedReader (Windows), and NewsGator (Windows - integrates with Outlook). There are also a number of web-based feed readers available. My Yahoo, Bloglines, and Google Reader are popular web-based feed readers.

Once you have your Feed Reader, it is a matter of finding sites that syndicate content and adding their RSS feed to the list of feeds your Feed Reader checks. Many sites display a small icon with the acronyms RSS, XML, or RDF to let you know a feed is available.

This is perfect for someone on the go or just really busy with everyday tasks and responsibilities. It also is great for those not able to check other media while at work or on certain platforms, now you can get notified on what you missed out on, so you can stay up to date on what is new.
